Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is moving to Miami, Florida, just three weeks after securing a seven-bedroom villa on a small private island in Biscayne Bay.
The tech tycoon, who has been based in Seattle since 1994, said he wanted to be closer to his parents and Blue Origin’s operations in Cape Canaveral, Florida. He announced the move on his Instagram account on Thursday.
“I have lived in Seattle longer than anywhere else and have so many great memories here. As exciting as the move is, it is an emotional decision for me,” wrote Bezos, the third richest person in the world with a fortune of $161 billion.

Bezos’ move from Seattle is significant because Amazon has transformed the city into a technology hub since opening its headquarters in Seattle.
Bezos founded Amazon in 1994 in the garage of his rented home in Bellevue, Washington, after a road trip from New York to Seattle.
Last month, Bezos purchased the Indian Creek, Florida, estate for $79 million, Bloomberg reported. The transaction closed on October 12, news agency The Real Deal reported, citing the Multiple Listing Service database.
The nearly 2-acre mansion exudes “timeless European glamour” and was built in 2000, according to the sales listing. It has a home theater, library, pool and wine cellar. The purchase comes alongside another property he purchased this summer for $68 million.
Indian Creek is known as the “Billionaire’s Bunker” because of its extremely wealthy residents. It was ranked by Zillow as the most expensive neighborhood in the US in 2021.
The private island is subject to strict security measures and is heavily guarded, Insider’s Hannah Towey reported in December 2022 after a tour of the area. Residents also include Bezos, investor Carl Icahn as well as Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump.
Amazon and Bezos did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment sent outside regular business hours.
