Jeremy Renner was trying to save his adult nephew from being hit by the snowplow when the machine accidentally crushed the famous “Avengers” star, according to an incident report from the Nevada Sheriff’s Office.
The “Hurt Locker” star didn’t engage the emergency brake because it began to slide sideways after he used it to pull his nephew’s truck out of the snow, according to the new, redacted report from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office (via CNN).
“The snow groomer skidded, causing Renner to get out of the vehicle without pulling the emergency brake,” the report concludes.
“Although the snow groomer had some mechanical problems, based on our mechanical inspection it is believed that the parking brake would prevent the snow groomer from moving forward.

“When Renner tried to stop or divert the snow groomer to avoid injuring (his nephew), he was pulled off the track under the vehicle and rolled over.”
The report also notes that the brake indicator was not working and “mechanical problems may have played a role in this accident.”

Renner’s nephew helped him as they waited for medical help to arrive and flew him to a trauma center. His representative confirmed at the time that he was in “critical but stable condition” and suffered “blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries” for which he underwent multiple surgeries.
Renner, 52, returned home earlier this month after spending nearly two weeks in hospital. He later revealed that he broke more than 30 bones in the snowplow accident on New Year’s Day.

“Those 30+ broken bones will heal, grow stronger as love and bonds with family and friends deepen,” he wrote alongside a photo of himself in a hospital bed with a doctor stretching his leg.
“Much love and appreciation to you all,” he wrote.
