Jeremy Renner was trying to stop a snowplow from skidding and hitting his nephew when the accident occurred, leaving him in critical condition, according to an incident report from the Nevada Sheriff’s Office.
The redacted Washoe County Sheriff’s Office report obtained by CNN said the emergency brake was not engaged, which would have stopped the snow removal tractor when it began to slide sideways.
“The snow groomer skidded, causing Renner to get out of the vehicle without using the emergency brake,” the report said. “Although the snow groomer had some mechanical problems, based on our mechanical inspection it is believed that the parking brake would prevent the snow groomer from moving forward. When Renner tried to stop or reverse the snow groomer to avoid injuring (his nephew), he was pulled off the track under the vehicle and rolled over.”

The report also noted that the brake indicator was not working and “mechanical problems may have been a factor”, but impairment is not believed to be a factor.
Renner’s nephew was able to take care of him until help arrived at the scene.
The 52-year-old actor was flown to a hospital near Reno after a neighbor who happened to be a doctor put a tourniquet on his leg to stop the bleeding.
Renner was transferred to intensive care following surgeries he underwent following the incident.
A chilling 911 call captured the moments after the accident as Renner moaned in pain in the background. The neighbor who called 911 said the Marvel star’s breathing was “shallow” and suggested sending a medical helicopter to the scene.
Last week, the two-time Oscar nominee announced that he had returned from the hospital and is recovering.

The Marvel actor has been hospitalized since Jan. 1 after “experiencing a weather-related snow-plowing accident” in Lake Tahoe and suffering “extensive” injuries.
Renner announced Saturday that he broke over 30 bones in his snowplow accident on New Year’s Day.
“Morning workout resolutions have all changed this special new year,” the Mayor of Kingstown star wrote in an Instagram post. “Emerged from tragedy for my entire family and quickly focused on uniting actionable love.”
The caption accompanied a photo of the 52-year-old actor lying in a hospital-style bed at his home while a medical specialist straightened his leg.
“I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and attention to my family and I,” he continued in the post, which quickly racked up a million likes. “Lots of love and appreciation to you all. Those 30+ broken bones will heal and grow stronger as love and bonds with family and friends deepen.”
“Love and blessings to you all,” he concluded, along with a series of heart and praying hand emojis.
The Avengers actor was run over by his own snowplow after trying to help a stranded family member near his home in Nevada, causing him to lose a significant amount of blood and ending him in intensive care. According to a statement at the time, Renner suffered “blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries” that required multiple surgeries.Instagram / @jeremyrenner
