Jerod Mayo drops a not-so-subtle hint on the Patriots' draft strategy – NESN

The head coach's comments could be misconstrued if he's thinking about tackling

The Patriots have a crucial draft ahead of them, and Jerod Mayo may have revealed which direction New England will take on Wednesday.

Mayo was officially introduced as the head coach at Foxboro, Massachusetts, and quickly showed why his tenure would be drastically different than that of his predecessor, Bill Belichick.

The new head coach admitted he was open to collaborating on personnel decisions, but when he sat down with WBZ after his press conference, there appeared to be a consensus has been set for the 2024 NFL Draft.

“We will select the best player for a very important position. You put the pieces together,” Mayo told Steve Burton, according to WEEI’s Mike Kadlick.

Unless Mayo and the front office agree that tackle is the “very important” position, one would probably assume he was referring to quarterback.

NFL draft experts agree that Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels will end up in New England, but there are mock drafts that don't predict the Patriots will select a quarterback with the No. 3 pick.

Mayo and Steve Belichick led a top-10 defensive unit this season, but the offense will be the biggest question mark in Mayo's first season as head coach and all eyes will be on the quarterback position.
