New York Jets wide receiver coach Miles Austin will be suspended for at least a year, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Rich Cimini, for violating the NFL’s gambling policy.
The NFL issued a statement Friday confirming Austin has been suspended and is appealing.
“The league will have no further comment until this objection is resolved,” the NFL’s statement said
Austin must serve each suspension before seeking reinstatement, a source told ESPN.
The NFL has been investigating Austin for some time, a source told ESPN after discovering he had bet on sports — not NFL games or college football — in violation of NFL staff gambling policy.

His attorney, Bill Deni, told NJ Advance Media that Austin did not bet on NFL games.
“The NFL suspended Miles Austin for wagering on table games and non-NFL pro sports from a legal mobile account,” Deni told NJ Advance Media. “Miles has not bet on any NFL game in violation of the NFL Personnel Gambling Policy. He was fully cooperative with the NFL’s investigation. He is appealing his suspension.”
Under the NFL’s gambling policy, all coaches are prohibited from betting on any type of sports, not just football.
“All NFL employees other than players are also prohibited from placing bets on any other professional (e.g., NBA, MLB, NHL, PGA, USTA, MLS), collegiate (e.g., NCAA basketball), international (e.g., . World Baseball Classic, World Cup) or Olympic sports competition, tournament or event,” the policy reads.
Austin had also been betting online at the team’s facility, which is also against NFL rules.
The league had been tracking his gambling activity on a website, a source told ESPN.
Austin has not been at the Jets facility since Tuesday, a source told ESPN.
Austin played in the NFL from 2006 to 2015, primarily with the Dallas Cowboys. Originally an undrafted free agent, he finished his career with 361 receptions for 5,273 yards. He was selected to two Pro Bowls.
Austin, 38, began coaching in 2019 as the offensive quality control coach for the San Francisco 49ers. He joined the Jets in 2021 as a member of Robert Saleh’s coaching staff.
