JFK Airport Power Outage Leaves Passengers Stuck

A power outage at New York’s Kennedy Airport has thrown travelers who rely on international flights into chaos.

According to a tweet from the airport, more travel disruptions are expected on Friday as Terminal 1 remains closed.

Arriving and departing flights took place at one of the busiest airports in the world.

More than 130 flights have been either canceled or delayed since Thursday, according to FlightAware.com.

The blackout came after what was described as a small fire in a service area.

“Travelers should check with their airlines for flight status before arriving at the airport,” JFK said. The Port Authority is continuing to work with the terminal operator to restore flight operations as soon as possible, she added.

JFK worked to accommodate impacted flights using other terminals after the power outage began Thursday.

Some passengers boarded buses Thursday night bound for Newark Liberty International Airport, where they hoped to catch replacement flights, according to local media.

The airport’s website showed that some flights scheduled to arrive at JFK were diverted to other East Coast airports.
