First Lady Jill Biden caught a “clap please” moment from Jeb Bush on Thursday when her applause fell completely silent during an event in Washington.

“I have visited red and blue states and found that the common values that unite us run deeper than our divisions,” Jill told an audience at the Reagan Institute Summit on Education in Washington, DC

After saying the phrase, the first lady paused for a moment before responding with surprise to the non-reaction of the viewers.

“And, um, I thought you could applaud that,” Biden said, drawing laughter and applause.

The first lady’s request for praise was reminiscent of former Republican presidential nominee Jeb Bush’s viral moment of desperation during the 2016 campaign.

The former Florida governor, with a mixture of courtesy and desperation, urged a New Hampshire audience to “please clap” after delivering a line from his short speech intended to rouse the crowd – but it didn’t.

The First Lady experienced a similarly awkward moment in 2019 when she stood up for her husband.

She told a small audience in Iowa that if Joe Biden were elected President, Americans would say to themselves, “At last someone is standing up to the NRA and making our children safe and our schools safe.”

The remark only sparked a reaction after a shocked Jill Biden exclaimed, “That’s my applause, come on!”

According to the Ronald Reagan Foundation and Institute, the RISE conference “is hosting educational leaders from across the country.”

The First Lady holds a faculty position at Northern Virginia Community College, where she teaches English.

Other speakers at the annual event included former Republican Governor of Arkansas Asa Hutchinson — a Republican presidential nominee for 2024 — and Democratic Governor of Maryland Wes Moore.
