“Five reasons why Hitler was preferable to Trump,” the Monty Python star began, before rattling off a list of six points: “1. He fought for his country. 2. He never used a teleprompter. 3. He was good with dogs. 4. He wrote his own books. 5. He never played golf. 6. He wasn’t much of a simpleton.”
John Cleese then continued his post in the same spirit: “Five reasons why Trump is preferable to Hitler… 1. He doesn't commit genocide 2. He has better hair 3. 4. 5.”
Does (edgy) British humor have limits? John Cleese later apologized in a new post: “I would like to apologize for my last tweet. It was a really bad joke, especially on Boxing Day.”
However, Monty Python – who has already targeted Hitler in his sketches – isn't the type to give up his “Jester” status.
In discussions about his posts, John Cleese defended his right to make jokes about controversial topics. Even if it means offensive or dissatisfied. Here's how the comedian responded to an internet user who noticed he was walking on a wire: “That's the fool's job.”
A proponent of subtlety, he dismissed those who, like one commentator, claimed that the joke gave the impression that he preferred Hitler to Trump. “The minds that take everything literally are still with us, it's a shame because they overlook so many things,” he said.
An answer similar to the answer he gave when asked why he wrote this joke: “Because I never tried to amuse simple people. There are a lot of comedians who do it and you’ll have fun with it.”
