According to the National Aphasia Association, aphasia is a language impairment that affects the production or comprehension of language and the ability to read or write.

The association reports that the condition always results from an injury to the brain, most commonly a stroke, particularly in older individuals.

Head injuries, brain tumors, or infections can also cause aphasia.
