Jon Stewart broke down in tears as he shared sad news with viewers of The Daily Show on Monday (February 26).
The political commentator returned to the Comedy Central program this month after a nine-year absence.
In an emotional tribute, he shared that his beloved dog Dipper had passed away the day before.
“In a world full of good guys, he was the best,” Stewart said, his voice breaking.
The host told viewers the story of how his family met Dipper – but he didn't get far before emotions began to spill over.
Stewart explained that 10 to 12 years ago his children wanted to raise some money for an animal shelter in New York called Animal Haven. After the family baked cupcakes and set their table outside, the shelter staff introduced them to Dipper.
Stewart described Dipper as “a brindle pit bull about a year old” before he choked. He slammed his fist on the table and said “F***” before pulling a box of tissues from under his desk.
He revealed that Dipper “got hit by a car in Brooklyn and lost his right leg.”

“I thought I was getting on,” the emotional host laughed as the tears continued.
“They put the dog on my lap. We left that day feeling good about having helped this great organization and also left with this brindle pit bull about a year old. We called him Dipper. In a world full of good guys, he was the best.”
Stewart then told viewers about Dipper's adventures as he revealed that the dog was part of the show's original crew.
“He came to the Daily Show every day. He was part of the dog crew on the OG Daily Show,” Stewart continued.
“We came to record this show and Dipper waited until I was finished,” he said.

“He met actors and authors and presidents and kings. And he did what the Taliban couldn’t, which was to terrify Malala Yousafzai.”
Stewart, who left The Daily Show in 2015, was replaced by Trevor Noah, who hosted the show until 2022. Stewart returned to his old position on February 12th.
He has agreed to host every Monday during the election and serve as executive producer of the weekly show for Comedy Central through next year to help with another transition.
