The Creed actor was accused by his then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari of slapping her, twisting her arm and throwing her into a car

Actor Jonathan Majors’ trial began on Wednesday for assault and harassment of a former girlfriend following an alleged domestic dispute.

According to Deadline, jury selection began in the morning for the high-profile case when Majors appeared in the courtroom. The 34-year-old actor, known for his roles in the “Creed” film series, “Lovecraft Country” and several current and upcoming Marvel projects, is facing multiple allegations of assault and harassment. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts; If found guilty, he could face up to a year in prison.

The case stems from an incident in March between Majors and his then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari.

He is accused of punching Jabbari in the face, twisting her arm behind her back and throwing her into a vehicle as the couple drove to Major’s apartment in the Chelsea neighborhood on March 25, ABC News reported.

The next day, Jabbari was treated at a hospital for a minor head injury following the incident and suffered a cut to his ear, bruises and a broken finger.

Majors was arrested on March 26 and released the same day. A judge then issued a temporary protective order barring Majors from contacting Jabbari, CNN reported.

In June, Majors filed a countersuit against Jabbari, claiming he was the one who was attacked. However, prosecutors declined to charge her after responding to Majors’ lawsuit in October. The actor’s legal team has claimed that Jabbari attacked Majors after seeing a text message from another woman and that Majors did not retaliate physically, The New York Times reported. They also allege Jabbari went clubbing after the alleged assault, later showed up at Majors’ home injured and threatened to harm himself, prompting Majors to call 911.

Several Marvel projects starring Majors – who appeared as a villain in the Loki series – have been postponed or canceled due to the allegations. According to the BBC, Marvel has postponed the release of two films in the Avengers series, which were supposed to include Majors, The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. Spin-off series and film sequels in which he would play a role were also reconsidered.

Prosecutors will likely include testimony from several of Majors’ ex-girlfriends in the trial. Jabbari is also expected to testify, but it is unclear whether Majors will.

The judge is expected to weigh requests from media outlets to unseal documents that could contain information about previous incidents involving Majors, Deadline also reported, citing sources familiar with the case.
