A lawyer for Jonathan Majors on Thursday released text messages he claims came from the woman he’s accused of assault, in which she appears to have blamed the fight.
According to the messages, which have not been independently verified, Majors’s wife wrote afterwards, “I told you it was my fault for trying to grab your phone.” She also said she was “angry” that majors had been arrested and that she had made it clear that the prosecution did not have her blessing.
“I have reiterated that this was not an assault,” the woman reportedly wrote. The person who sent the texts also states that she had “injuries” and that “we had a fight.”
A NYPD official said, “We have an active and ongoing investigation but cannot comment beyond that.”
Majors was arrested in Manhattan over the weekend and charged with assault and molestation following a domestic argument with a 30-year-old woman, authorities said. Majors was taken into custody without incident after New York City police responded to an 911 call at a Chelsea apartment on Saturday. The unnamed victim was later taken to hospital with “minor injuries to his head and neck,” authorities said.
“Mr. Majors completely denies assaulting the woman,” his defense attorney Priya Chaudhry said in Thursday’s statement. She also claims that it was Majors who called 911.
“Police, as usual, came with the paramedics and arrested Mr. Majors under NYPD protocol that calls for an arrest under certain circumstances,” Chaudhry added. “She also denied any allegations that he did anything to her and confirmed that Mr. Majors called 911 about her mental health.”
In three sets of messages – provided by Chaudhry and redacted to protect the woman’s privacy – the woman reportedly wrote: “Please let me know if you get this you’re okay. You assured me that you will not be charged. They said they had to arrest you for the record when they saw my injuries and knew we had a fight. I’m so angry they did it. And I’m sorry you’re in this position. Will make sure nothing happens. I told them it was my fault for trying to grab your phone. I just got out of the hospital. Just give me a call when you’re out. I love you.”
In a follow-up text message sent a few hours later, she says: “They just called back to check on me and I reiterated that this was not an assault and they do not have my blessing that charges are being brought become. I read the paper they gave me about strangulation and said straight out that this had not happened and should be removed immediately. The judge will definitely be informed of this. She promised me that. I know you have the best team and you don’t need to worry. I just want you to know that I’m doing everything I can. I also said to tell the judge that the origin of the call had to do with my breakdown and powerlessness and your concern as my partner based on our previous communications. From care. She promised that everything will be passed on.”
Chaudhry has previously said there is evidence of majors being cleared. A representative for Majors also denied the allegations after Majors was released from custody Saturday night. “He didn’t do anything wrong,” his publicist told Variety. “We look forward to clearing his name and clearing this up.”
Majors, an Emmy nominee for HBO’s Lovecraft Country, recently appeared in Creed III and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. He also received recognition for “Magazine Dreams,” which premiered at Sundance and was acquired by Searchlight Pictures. It is scheduled for release on December 8th.
