Hollywood actor Jonathan Majors says he is “completely innocent” after allegedly choking his partner during a domestic argument.

The Marvel and Creed III star was arrested in New York on Saturday and charged with assaulting and molesting a 30-year-old woman, described by TMZ as his girlfriend.

On Sunday, Mr Majors’ lawyer Priya Chaudhry claimed the woman was the attacker and has now retracted her allegations.

“Jonathan Majors is completely innocent and has been proven to have been the victim of an altercation with a woman he knows. We are rapidly gathering evidence and presenting it to the district attorney with the expectation that all charges will be dropped shortly,” Ms Chaudhry said in a statement provided to The Independent.

“This evidence includes video footage from the vehicle in which this episode took place, testimonies from the driver and others who saw and heard the episode, and most importantly, two written statements from the woman denying these allegations. All the evidence proves that Mr Majors is completely innocent and did not attack her in any way.

“Unfortunately, this incident happened because this woman was going through an emotional crisis for which she was taken to hospital yesterday. The NYPD needs to make an arrest in these situations and this is the only reason Mr. Majors was arrested. We expect these charges to be dropped soon.”

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) said its officers responded to an 911 call at a Chelsea apartment at 11:14 a.m. and determined it was a “domestic dispute.”

The woman told police she was attacked and taken to a local hospital with minor injuries to her head and neck. Mr Majors was “taken into custody without incident,” the NYPD said. He has since been released.

In a statement to multiple media outlets, Mr Majors’ spokeswoman Carrie Gordon said: “He has done nothing wrong. We look forward to clearing his name and clearing this up.”

Mr. Majors was last seen as Kang in Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantamania opposite Paul Rudd, and is rumored to be starring alongside Tom Hiddleston in the upcoming second season of Loki .

Earlier this year he also starred in Creed III with Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson. His other work includes the HBO drama Lovecraft Country and the 2021 western The Harder They Fall.
