After spending a dream summer, Jonathan Marchessault is slowly coming out of his clouds.
At least that’s what he told Jean-Charles Lajoie during an interview broadcast on Tuesday.
“All good things come to an end. I am extremely happy with what happened. I try to enjoy it as much as possible. After a few weeks, we signed a contract with a company to make a video of the day I received the trophy. I had to sit down and answer questions. In that moment I realized the journey and everything it took to get there.”
The man who won both the Stanley Cup and the Conn-Smythe Trophy last June admits he still feels the same hunger to win. He still has great ambitions for the 2023-2024 season.
“I can be happy with my mentality, but I always find a new goal and a new motivation. I still have far fewer kilometers ahead of me than I have already covered. I am aware of that. I won’t overlook that. I know we have a great chance to get back into the playoffs this year and have a competitive team. I will do everything to give my team a chance to win.
However, the Quebecer has to deal with a special situation this year. He is in the final year of his contract and his name has been in rumors recently.
“That’s the beauty of sport. There is never anything certain. My contract runs for another year. I think the organization is aware of this. That’s the sad part of hockey. Rumors about transactions arise every year. It doesn’t bother me and I focus on what I can do.”
Marchessault also said very honestly that he doesn’t know if his future lies with the Golden Knights.
“It is certain that I would like a contract extension. When I signed my last contract I was in a situation where it was a really good contract for me. Now I’m in a situation where I can be a little more privileged. I will also think to my advantage. We built something good in Vegas. I wish I could continue this. When I look at an organization like Washington, they keep players that have been in their core for a few years. I like it. I would like to feel that too. Lets see what happens.”
