However, Peterson said that all of the complaints in question were political and had nothing to do with his past or present clients as a psychologist.

“I should complete such a training course, with reports documenting my ‘progress,’ or face a personal court and have my right to practice as a licensed clinical psychologist suspended,” Peterson wrote on Twitter.

Peterson, who has frequently made the headlines with controversial views and is hailed by the right, said he will not comply.

Peterson initially caused controversy for refusing to use gender-neutral pronouns while teaching at the University of Toronto. He has become internationally known with sold-out lectures and bestsellers.

The CPO is Ontario’s governing body for psychologists, charged with protecting “the public interest by overseeing and regulating the practice of psychology,” according to its website.

“About a dozen people from around the world filed complaints over a four-year period (out of the 15 million who follow me on social media) about my public statements on Twitter and (Joe) Rogan, claiming that I had people ‘ harmed’ (not her) with my views,” Peterson said.

He said the CPO could have seen the complaints as annoying but decided to pursue them.

“I have been accused of harming people, although none of the plaintiffs involved in the current lawsuit were past or current clients of mine or known to any of my clients,” he said.

Peterson said many of those who filed complaints claimed they were his customers, when that was not true.

Concerns include that Peterson has expressed support for Conservative federal leader Pierre Poilievre and has criticized Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Peterson claims. It’s not clear what comments are worrying the CPO – the organization has not said so in a statement to Global News, citing confidentiality regulations.

Peterson has said he intends to publicize the allegations whenever possible while following legal and ethical constraints.

In a column penned by Peterson in the National Post on Wednesday, Peterson added that he has been accused of being “sexist, transphobic, incapable of the requisite body positivity surrounding morbid obesity and an unforgivable climate change denier.”

“Each and every one of these allegations (and now accepted evidence of my professional misconduct) is independent of my clinical practice — which, incidentally, has been suspended since 2017, when my rising notoriety or fame made it practical and practical to continue as a private therapist ethically impossible,” Peterson wrote .

However, the National Post reported that in 2018 Peterson agreed to a plan to improve his clinical practice. The newspaper said there were few details about what constituted professional misconduct in this case, but that the complaint had to do with the way he communicates with patients, the quality of his services and the boundaries between psychologist and patient.

According to a document Peterson released on Twitter Wednesday morning from the CPO, his Complaints Committee said in a report that he was concerned that he “lacked professionalism in public statements on social media and during a podcast appearance on January 25, 2022.” lacked”.

In return, the CPO said Peterson must undergo a coaching program, at his expense, “to review, reflect on, and improve (his) professionalism in public speaking.”

Failure to progress through the program and the coach to provide a report showing the concerns have been “appropriately addressed in the public interest” may constitute professional misconduct and may lead to an investigation, the document said.

Peterson said the situation sheds light on broader concerns in Canadian society, where professionals are “afraid to tell you the truth.”

In his statement to Global News, the CPO said, “The College has no authority to discuss this matter under the confidentiality provisions of Section 36 of the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 in Ontario.”

The CPO provided a link to the publicly available information about Peterson.

Under the Discipline and Other Procedures tab of his profile, public statements confirm that Peterson is required to attend a “specified continuing education or development program” regarding his “professionalism.”

It also says that Peterson has filed a motion for judicial review in the Ontario Divisional Court. Peterson said he was conducting a constitutional challenge.

In a follow-up email, Global News asked the college what standards of conduct it has for licensed individuals regarding their public conduct not directly related to their practice, but received no response.

The CPO’s professional standards regarding public statements relate largely to the promotion of services, although there is a section on providing “information, advice or comment to the public through any medium”.

It is not clear what professional standards may affect the college regarding the Peterson affair.

Peterson’s posts on Twitter about the CPO have garnered a lot of attention, including from Elon Musk.

Musk appeared to have encouraged Peterson to livestream any possible disciplinary hearing.

“I will ensure that the disciplinary hearing, if and when it occurs, is made available on my YouTube channel,” Peterson said in response.
