José Manuel Salazar Xirinachs takes office as Executive Secretary of ECLAC

The economist José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs from Costa Rica took over the position of Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) this Wednesday, which had already been granted to him on September 1, 2022 by the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) António Guterres, according to the organization cited by Telesur.

The media reports that ECLAC highlighted among the achievements of his academic career that José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs holds a degree in Economics from the University of Costa Rica and a PhD in Economics from the University of Cambridge, UK.

In announcing the nomination, Guterres underscored that Mr. Salazar brings a deep understanding of development and a lifelong interest and passion in analyzing, designing, implementing and evaluating policies that promote economic, social and economic development.

José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs took his first managerial role at the ILO, which he joined in 2005, as Executive Director for Employment, where he also served as Deputy Director-General for Policies from 2013 to 2015.

Before joining this agency, he was Director of the Trade Unit of the Organization of American States (OAS) from 1998 to 2005. He was also Minister of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica from 1997 to 1998.
