It's no news that house cleaning is widely expected in Washington. The question is what new owner Josh Harris will do next.
Harris could actually go after Bill Belichick.
According to a league source, Harris is excited about the idea of Belichick coaching the Commanders. The question is whether Harris would give Belichick full control of the staff — and whether Belichick would view the lack of final say on the roster and the draft as a dealbreaker.
The crucial question, of course, is whether Belichick will even be available. That still needs to be clarified.
It's possible Belichick won't leave the Patriots. It's also possible that a de facto trade would have to happen if Harris wants Belichick and Belichick wants to coach the Commanders. (In October, we caught wind of a rumor linking Belichick to the Commanders in Trade.)
Of all the current possible outcomes (and as I'll explain in a later point), a clean sweep is the most likely end game in New England if things actually end. That would give Harris a clean shot at Belichick.
Aside from the question of whether Belichick would insist on complete control of football operations, there's also the question of whether he wants the job. The franchise is steeped in history and tradition and is located a short distance from its hometown of Annapolis, Maryland. Some believe that he will not be inclined to move very far from the eastern part of the country.
But it could take some time to build things in DC if a playoff team that loses in the wild card round (or divisional round) decides to go after Belichick (we've previously linked Belichick to Dallas if a Mike McCarthy (A blunder ends the latest chase to Gloryhole.) Perhaps he's more drawn to a place where the table is already set for victory.
Much remains to be resolved, but for now, here are the facts: Harris is interested in Belichick as a coach, but perhaps not as a GM. Where we go from here will be part of the rollercoaster ride that will begin as early as tonight as teams begin to part ways with their current coaches.
