journalist from " News" apologizes after defending Israeli attack

Jorge Pontual used social media to justify comments about ambulance bombings

The journalist Jorge Pontual of GloboNews published an apology on his Instagram profile this Saturday (November 4, 2023) after being criticized by Minister Paulo Pimenta (Secretariat of Social Communications) for statements about the war between Israel and Hamas.

In the publication, the journalist said he was unhappy with his comment. “My intention was to present Israel’s version. I admit I wasn’t happy because for many it seemed like confirmation. That would be impossible,” he wrote.

He also said he “deeply regrets” the “apparent” support for Israel. “I apologize for not making this clear.” Read the full statement at the end of the report.

Previously, Paulo Pimenta posted on his profile X (formerly Twitter) criticized the journalist’s statements. He said the channel’s analyst had taken a “manipulative and cowardly stance on the war in the Middle East.”

“It is unacceptable. It’s embarrassing. It is frightening. GloboNews commentator Jorge Pontual is known for his manipulative and cowardly stance on the war in the Middle East. “It is one thing to condemn acts of terrorism, the death and kidnapping of Israeli civilians, it is another to justify the barbarism, genocide and indiscriminate death of thousands of children and innocent Palestinians,” Pimenta wrote.

Here is Jorge Pontual’s full statement:

“When I commented on the attack on an ambulance in Gaza, I wanted to give the Israeli version. I admit I wasn’t happy because for many it seemed like confirmation. That would be impossible, no one has reliable information about what is going on there. Of course, just a fact: the Palestinians in Gaza are experiencing a tragedy with many civilian losses, which I deeply regret. I apologize for not making that clear.”
