"Joyful and glorious": The British press celebrates the coronation of Charles III.

Most UK newspapers published a special edition this Sunday 7th April to celebrate what many headlines have dubbed a ‘glorious coronation’.

“Glorious Coronation”. This Sunday, May 7th, the day after the coronation of Charles III, the front pages of British newspapers were decked out in purple, jewels and ermine to commemorate the coronation of Britain’s new monarch and his wife Camilla.

As a testament to the historical importance of the event that took place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, many titles have chosen to publish a new format, such as The Mail on Sunday, which sells more than a million copies every Sunday and has a ” historical souvenir edition”.

The tabloid features King Charles III on its cover. and his wife Queen Camilla on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, exchanging a knowing look. What caught the eye of the journalists, who captioned this issue: “The look that says, ‘Darling, it was a triumph!'”.

“King Chas III”

The same editorial decision for The Sunday Telegraph, which also decided to show the British royal couple, this time photographed at Buckingham Palace. But unlike the tabloids, the editors of the Sunday Telegraph opted for a sober edition, with no text, adorned only with a subtle border overhanging the photo.

The Sun on Monday, the Daily Star Sunday and the Sunday Mirror have chosen to illustrate this historic day with a photo taken during the ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

Thus, the sun depicts the newly crowned king holding the two scepters presented to him during the ceremony, including the scepter crowned by a dove, called the “stick of justice and mercy”. “Glorious Coronation,” writes the title, which also places two photos at the ends of its one, one with Camilla crowned, a second showing the moment when her crown is placed back on the monarch’s head.

Journalists in the Daily Star and Daily Mirror used a photograph of Charles III. with sphere in hand, that solid gold sphere evoking the jeweled earth representing Christian sovereignty over the world.

The Daily Star Sunday has already decided to shorten the monarch’s name and write ‘King Chas III’.

The Sunday Express finally evokes a “joyful and glorious” day with a photograph of the crowned Charles III, taken from Buckingham Palace, greeting his subjects. The photo has been cropped to better highlight the king.

“The crowd – and the protests”

The Sunday Times looks back on the inside pages of the long wait that the life of Charles III. shaped when he one day replaced his mother. But also about waiting for Camilla, who has long been Britain’s most hated woman. “Her glorious coronation at last,” reads the headline, along with a picture of the royal couple on the balcony.

The Observer, Sunday’s Guardian, shows King Charles III. at the ceremony in Westminster Abbey and writes: “his coronation moment”. But the title for the abolition of the monarchy, known for its republican leanings, also returns to “the crowd – and the demonstrations” in connection with the numerous arrests at the coronation.

Additionally, The Observer is one of those rare titles that doesn’t devote its front page solely to the coronation. The bottom of the page is reserved for the severe setback suffered by the Conservative Party in the local elections, held just a year before the general election in southern England.

Finally, the Sunday edition of Scottish daily The Herald autographs a double front page showing the entire royal family gathered alongside Charles and Camilla on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. “The UK unites on historic occasion of spectacular coronation of King Charles III,” reads the headline.
