Oscar-winner Julia Roberts, who rose to superstardom thanks in part to a string of popular romantic comedies like Pretty Woman, Notting Hill and My Best Friend’s Wedding, says it wasn’t a voluntary decision that she’s long since married no more has made 20 years.
“People sometimes misinterpret the time that has gone by when I haven’t done romantic comedy as that I didn’t want to do one. If I had read something that I thought was Notting Hill level of writing or My Best Friend’s Wedding level, I would,” Roberts told The New York Times Magazine on Sunday.
Even after finding the rom-com script she’s loved for 20 years — which turned out to be Ol Parker’s Ticket to Paradise, due out this October — Roberts said there was another hurdle: she wanted to do the project, but only opposite one of Hollywood’s most in-demand leading actors.
“I thought, ‘Well, disaster, because that only works if it’s George Clooney.’ Lo and behold, George felt like it only worked on me. Somehow we both made it and off we went.”
So did she still have the same ease with the subject?
“The good news is yes. I love to laugh and be funny. You get into this mode where these endorphins are released when you’re smart and people go, ‘Oh!’ Then it becomes that automatic thing where you always remember to have fun. It is a pleasure to play in this sandbox. It was a long time.”
Speaking of two decades, Roberts told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show tonight how she celebrated her twentieth anniversary with husband Danny Moder.
“What’s the secret of a successful marriage?” asked Colbert.
“You know the answer to that, too,” Roberts shot back, after which Colbert admitted to applause that he has been with his wife, Evelyn McGee-Colbert, for 28 years.
Colbert then suggested that they blurt it out at the count of three, which she believes makes marriages strong.
Colbert shouted, “Sorry!”
Roberts said, “Kiss.”
The answer, of course, unprepared by him.
“Well, I want to apologize to my wife for not saying ‘kiss.’ “
