Juliette Binoche: “I never play submissive women”

“I was raised by a feminist mother and my grandmother got divorced when no one else would. Advice from my mother? Always be financially independent. In short, play a certain type of woman like Eugenie in La passion de Dodin. “Bouffant suits me naturally, I have rarely played submissive women.” This is how the legend Juliette Binoche presents the film by Trần Anh Hùng at the Rome Film Festival, which won best director at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and will be released in February with Lucky Red. The Vietnamese-born French author of The Scent of Green Papaya, Cyclo and Norwegian Wood stages a story set in France at the end of the 19th century. Eugenie (Binoche), a sophisticated cook, and Dodin-Bouffant (Benoit Magimel), a famous restaurateur, have been working side by side for twenty years. Their relationship was based on trust and gradually developed into something sentimental. However, Eugenie claims her freedom until the end and does not want to marry him. However, he doesn’t give up and moves on their common ground: the kitchen. The actress, who had already explored the theme of food seduction with “Chocolat” in 2000, met her ex Benoit Magimel on the set of the film, with whom she had her daughter Hannah.

“We haven’t seen each other much in recent years and this was an opportunity to rediscover each other as accomplices,” he says, “especially because the film is nothing more than a love story. So we exchanged loving sentences that we said, “I’ve been talking to each other for a long time.” Binoche, Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actress (The English Patient) and a beautiful 59-year-old, says of her relationship with food: “I’m pretty greedy , but for simple things and in Italy my taste buds go wild. “Your food.” is motherly, it’s authentic comfort food.” What do you think of the actors’ strike in Hollywood? “Artificial intelligence is a big mystery, who knows where it will take us and that is why the union is right to fight. We actors cannot be manipulated. The Sag to which I belong must fight to the end. Actually, I want to say – Binoche underlines – that I am here to present this film because I had the permission of the union, since La passion de Dodin Bouffant is an independent film.
