In January, two men bled to death during cockfights in India after being sliced by knives attached to roosters.

One victim, Gande Suryapraksha Rao, was tying blades to the feet of his prized rooster before a fight in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, when the bird, startled by the crowd, flew up and cut his leg.

The 43-year-old was immediately taken to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival, The New Indian Express reported.

In a second incident, a 20-year-old spectator at an event in East Godavari was struck by a bird while standing near the cockfighting pit.

The blade attached to the bird cut his hand and caused him to bleed profusely. He died on the way to the hospital.

Cockfighting is common in Andhra Pradesh, a state on the southeast coast of India, especially during Sankranti, an important day in the Hindu calendar.

Cockfighting has a long tradition in the region, but many have taken the sport to the extreme by attaching blades to the birds’ feet.

Indian authorities made cockfighting illegal in 1960, and courts upheld the ban in 2016.

In 2018, however, the Supreme Court gave the go-ahead for cockfighting to be performed in the traditional way, while the more extreme version remained banned.

Police have tried to restrict activities in recent years, but the events have garnered popular support with hotels in Andhra Pradesh’s Godvavari districts being booked well in advance.
