Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Sunday announced by-elections would be held in four constituencies across the country, including one in Quebec, to replace former minister Marc Garneau.
On June 19, 2023, the by-elections will be held in the counties of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce-Westmount, Quebec, Oxford, Ontario, Winnipeg South Center, Manitoba, and Portage-Lisgar, Manitoba. to fill vacancies in the House of Commons. Voters can also vote in advance on June 9, 10, 11 and 12.
Recall that in Quebec, the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce-Westmount seat has been vacant since early March after Liberal MP Marc Garneau resigned amid controversy after campaigning against his own party, Montreal’s Anglophones in the Debate about the new official language law.
The former astronaut was first elected in Westmount-Ville-Marie in 2008 and then re-elected in the new Notre-Dame-de-Grâce-Westmount constituency in 2011 and 2015 before being appointed Minister for Transport in the Justin Trudeau regime of the Liberal government. In 2021 he was re-elected.
