Kahului restaurant closed due to cockroach infestation – Honolulu Star-Advertiser

Siu’s Chinese Kitchen in Kahului has been closed by the state Department of Health due to a worrisome cockroach infestation.

After receiving an anonymous complaint, the department conducted an inspection at the restaurant on Thursday.

“Live cockroaches were located on the food buffet, in the food, on food contact surfaces, serving utensils, appliances and walls. Cockroach egg casings and dead roaches have also been observed on or near food contact surfaces. Food containers were left open to allow pests to enter and grease and debris were evident,” a health department news release said.

The health department immediately closed the restaurant and a follow-up inspection is scheduled for Monday. Meanwhile, in a press release, the department outlined the following corrective actions before the restaurant can reopen:

>>Eradication of the current roach population;

>>Provide a pest control and monitoring program and invoices for professional pest control treatments;

>>Clean and remove dead cockroaches, eggshells, food particles and grease deposits;

>>Seal or cover holes and openings through which pests can enter;

>>Remove clutter in the kitchen, storage and restroom areas. And

>>Dispose of broken storage containers and cover dry foods properly.

The closure marked the second restaurant in Kahului to be closed by the health department on Thursday.

The health department said Jacky’s Macau Café was issued a red placard because it lacked adequate refrigeration.

Jacky’s must remain closed until all violations are resolved and inspection is passed.

The violations were discovered during a routine inspection Thursday and include: refrigerators at unsafe temperatures; inaccessible sink for washing hands; and no disinfectant solution for equipment on site.

“An unauthorized live animal” was also found in the restaurant.

The follow-up check is scheduled for Monday.
