Following the death of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas called for tougher sanctions against Russia. “We have to think about unconventional solutions,” said Kallas, according to the German newspaper “Welt” yesterday. “There is one thing that Russia fears: the use of the assets that we currently have frozen.”
Kallas suggested that this money should be used to compensate Ukraine for the destruction caused by the Russian war of aggression. His country has already drafted a law on this matter at national level. “It is clear that Russia is harming Ukraine through the war damage it is causing. “Therefore, Ukraine has a legitimate claim against Russia,” Kallas said to justify himself.
“We have now frozen Russian assets. Therefore, Russia has a legitimate demand from us,” added the head of government. “If we resolve these two demands, we will be able to give the money to Ukraine. So the point is that our taxpayers should not pay for the damage that Russia is causing, but Russia should also pay and be held accountable for its actions.”
