DR. Sohonie was born in 1911 in the town of Indore, now in Madhya Pradesh, central India. As the daughter and niece of respected chemists, she wanted to follow the same path as her father and uncle, who were studying at the same institute where she would develop her work in the future. She studied chemistry and physics at the University of Bombay in Bengaluru and was awarded the top of her class in 1933. After graduating, she became the first woman to be admitted to the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc). but with strict rules imposed by Professor Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (CV Raman). The director at the time, who was also a Nobel Prize winner, shared the belief at the time that women were not capable of producing science.

Among the rules imposed on Kamala Sohonie during her first year of research were the conditions that she was not admitted as a regular student and that she was not allowed to harm the environment by “distracting” the men of the institute. After the period, Dr. Sohonie demonstrated her knowledge, received permission to continue her research, and influenced CV Raman to include more women in her program.
