Kane Velazquez, a former UFC champion, has been arrested in a shooting in the Gulf region

The victim was taken to a local hospital on Monday with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the San Jose Police Department.

Velázquez was sentenced in Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, police said in a tweet and he was still there on Tuesday. CNN turned to Velázquez and his manager for comment. It is unclear whether he hired a lawyer.

Police provided few details, except that the incident took place near the intersection of Monterey Highway and Bailey Avenue. CNN requested a police report, but did not receive one until Tuesday afternoon.

“The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated,” San Jose police said.

Delaney Murray of the Santa Clara County Attorney’s Office said: “Our service has not yet received the police inspection report and therefore there is no information about Mr Velazquez. No charges have been filed so far. “

Going to jail shows that no bail has been set and a court hearing is possible on Wednesday.

Velazquez, 39, competed in the UFC heavyweight division and became a two-time champion. His last match was in 2019.

The mixed martial arts professional had 12 wins by knockout, two by decision and two title defenses, according to his UFC profile. Velázquez had three losses.

His hometown is Salinas, California, and he trained in San Jose. After leaving the UFC, Velázquez turned to professional wrestling.
