Just days after his 92nd birthday, the great Austrian popular actor Karl Merkatz died at his home in Salzburg on Sunday morning. The announcement was made by his family to the APA. He impressed Austrians as the butcher Karl Bockerer in the films of Franz Antel and as Edmund “Mundl” Sackbauer in Reinhard Schwabenitzky’s TV series “A real Viennese does not sink”: two gruff but warm working men.
In his more than 150 stage roles, Merkatz has mainly played characters by Nestroy, Raimund and Shakespeare. Throughout his career, Merkatz has appeared in over 250 film and television productions, making film and local television history.
