Karlie Kloss is a master at mixing patterns as she attends a star-studded Burberry event in NYC alongside Gabrielle Union, Taylor Hill and Cara Delevingne

Karlie Kloss showed off her chic sense of style by mixing two bold patterns while attending the star-studded Knight Bar opening event in NoHo, New York.

On Thursday evening, the 31-year-old supermodel was among the many celebrities, including Gabrielle Union, Taylor Hill and Cara Delevingne, who flocked to Burberry’s temporary takeover of Temple Bar.

The event marks the fourth edition of the British fashion house’s “Burberry Streets,” which the brand described as “a series of acquisitions celebrating the art of discovery and exploration in cities around the world,” which began in September.

Additional branches were in Seoul, Shanghai and London.

According to Drapers Online, the “Knight Bar draws inspiration from Burberry’s past and present and celebrates the launch of Daniel Lee’s Knight bag for Winter 2023” and the design of an equestrian knight.

The Burberry pop-up will be open November 10-16 at 332 Lafayette St. in Lower Manhattan.

Meanwhile, the 51-year-old Breaking In actress wore a red and yellow striped low-cut jumpsuit under a long fur coat.

Delevingne, who met with Cecile Winckler, exuded confidence in a charcoal gray jacket and checked trousers.

Hill chose to stand out from the crowd with a yellow and light gray turtleneck and matching pants.

Maggie Gyllenhaal was in attendance, as were Pete Davidson’s ex-girlfriend Chase Sui Wonders, Joey Bada$$, Jamie Chung, Bryan Greenberg, June Ambrose and Kelsey Asbille

In September, creative director Daniel Lee launched the heritage brand’s spring/summer collection, which received the approval of many A-list stars.

The high-end fashion house – arguably Britain’s leading luxury label – had humble beginnings.

The brand was founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry, a teetotaler and devout Baptist. He then invented gabardine, the waterproof fabric that revolutionized rainwear.

Roald Amundsen traveled to the South Pole and Ernest Shackleton traveled to Antarctica, in Burberry. Then the War Department commissioned the company to design the “trench coat” worn by officers in World War I.

In an early case of celebrity endorsement, Lord Kitchener declared himself a fan, and after the war civilians began wearing them.

Burberry made aviation and ski clothing but remained a quiet London company until Rose Marie Bravo, an American executive, took over the company in 1997.

She raised the profile of the film, expanded to America, commissioned an advertising campaign starring Kate Moss in 1999 and hired Christopher Bailey as a member of the design team in 2001.

In 2002, the design was dubbed the “Chav Check” after it was far from being embraced by stars like actress Danniella Westbrook, who wore it head-to-toe on an outing with her Burberry-clad daughter and a plaid stroller.

It was also the favorite of Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, who at the time was still very firmly rooted in WAG territory, in contrast to her current high fashion status.

The brand wasn’t just reserved for celebrities who had the money to invest in a high-end brand. It’s easy to see that the Burberry check, priced at £50, was also an affordable way to secure the luxury of baseball caps.

Such was the brand’s popularity in the 2000s that Welsh rap group Goldie Lookin Chain organized a “chav rally” in 2004 – complete with a “Burberry” car

Worse, it was easy to copy and spawned an industry of even cheaper counterfeits. It became associated with football hooligans and some venues banned anyone from wearing it, so deeply rooted was the association with anti-social behavior.

In the words of social commentator Peter York, author of the official Sloane Ranger Handbook: “It became associated with people doing bad things and playing wild on the terraces.”

“A lot of people thought Burberry would be worn by the person who mugged them.”

In short, by the end of the 90s the brand had become a victim of its own success. But the company refused to admit defeat. Measures were taken to curb the decline: production of the closures was stopped and the use of checks was generally reduced. In 2004, Bailey was promoted to creative director. Burberry became a more serious player.

In 2006, a turning point came in the form of another American CEO with an impressive resume: Angela Ahrendts.

She arrived and, together with Bailey, accomplished the remarkable feat of devising a strategy to push Burberry well ahead of the competition and into the “hot” zone using a combination of design skills, marketing know-how and business acumen.

Kate Middleton has certainly helped Burberry’s cause too. A champion of British designers, she has worn the label frequently over the last decade or so, a reminder of its strong legacy.

A month before her wedding to Prince William in 2011, the now Princess of Wales wore a cream Burberry coat while visiting Northern Ireland. And last year she wore a checked green mid-length Burberry dress while abroad in Boston for the Earthshot Prize.

Celebrities fell in love with the brand again. A Burberry poncho bearing a personalized monogram and costing more than £1,000 proved central to the 2015 sales boom.

The wool and cashmere designs, first worn on the runway by Delevingne in 2014, were later worn by Victoria Beckham, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Sienna Miller and Sarah Jessica Parker.
