Karol G slams GQ Mexico magazine for editing its cover: ‘My face doesn’t look like it’

(CNN Spanish) – Karol G expressed his disappointment and disagreement this Thursday after his first covers were published in the Mexican edition of GQ magazine.

The Colombian singer criticized what she described as over-editing the photos.

“My face doesn’t look like this, my body doesn’t look like this and I feel very happy and comfortable with how I look naturally,” Karol G wrote in an Instagram post.

The Medellín-born artist said she had shared her concerns with GQ about the editions without getting any change ahead of release.

“I appreciate Opportunity Magazine because I was very happy when they confirmed I would be there, but although they made it clear that I disagreed with the number of edits they made to the photo, they didn’t do anything about it,” the singer said.

Karol G published his complaint in a small carousel of two photos on Instagram. The first picture shows her naturally and without make-up, the artist’s publicist confirmed to CNN.

The second picture is the cover of GQ, which features the skinniest singer with very prominent cheekbones.

Karol G said on Instagram that you don’t need “all those changes” to look good and that this image, so far removed from reality, can have an impact on women and the public.

“I understand the impact that can have, but aside from feeling like it’s disrespectful to me, it’s women who wake up every day trying to feel comfortable despite society’s stereotypes,” the singer said.

CNN has reached out to GQ Mexico for comment on this cover, but has yet to receive a response.

A rep for Karol G assured CNN via email that the magazine had been contacted several times about the cover.

GQ also doesn’t have this issue’s cover on their social media profiles. However, the report about the artist is available on the magazine’s website.

reactions to the cover

In a publication of the magazine on Instagram with the cover by designer Yohji Yamamoto, GQ Mexico received comments from users who shared the photo of Karol G.

One user said the singer deserved an apology, while another asked if the Japanese designer was edited or “skinned”. Why not him?” the comment reads.

The photos in the report also show a different Karol G than what her fans are used to seeing on her social media profiles.

Karol G.’s statement on the social network received almost four million likes and 64,000 comments within a few hours. Among them was that of the singer Sofía Reyes, who applauded the words of the Colombian proverb “beautiful tidings”.

For her part, Kany García said that “unreal in photo 2. Beautiful and wonderful in 1. The world is changing to be updated once and for all based on our own positions.”

Karol G and self love

This isn’t the first time Karol G has taken to her social media or spoken in interviews to discuss the criticism she’s receiving about her looks.

A month ago, the interpreter explained on Antena 3’s Spanish program El Hormiguero why she published unedited photos on her channels.

“For a long time I also retouched the photos to make them look perfect, to make them look amazing, until one day they took a photo on the beach, I didn’t look like the photos on my Instagram and I said it doesn’t matter ” said the singer.

“That’s who I am. Sometimes I’m super fit, sometimes I’m not that fit and that’s normal for a lot of reasons. I’ve seen people bullying me in a way because they’re actually a lot on my body criticized the way I look, the way I dress, the way I express myself, the way I speak. It affected me so much for a long time that I understood that it doesn’t have to affect me. I try to be very open on social networks to be (and say) I’m like you … look at my fat ones, look at my little arms, I don’t have them like I suddenly had them before, look at my stomach (I don’t have I don’t have it ) as I suddenly want to,” added Carol G.

He also responded to comments about his body in the promotional photos for his single starring Romeo Santos, “X si volvemos,” on his Instagram Stories earlier this year. The response was to a comment saying his stomach can be seen in the photos.

The Colombian said: “The tummy was because of that hot dog that someone gave me at a show these days… although it’s been a long time since I’ve been that sensible about exercise, I can say she did it at another time.” , if not, will be can look even bigger”.

Karol G also said that “all bodies are different…they are all beautiful just the way they are.”
