Before the mass event began this morning, there was a moving rendition of the national anthem in honor of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who died last month.
After the ceremony, the elite men and crowd group were launched by England Lions Leah Williamson, Ellen White and Jill Scott.
Many of the participants will do so for charity, often with moving personal stories behind why they are putting their bodies to the test after spending months and sometimes years preparing for the big event.
As participants make their way past the crowds, they will also see the capital’s landmarks including Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, the London Eye, Westminster and of course Buckingham Palace down the stretch.
Equally iconic are the now-famous costumes some runners don when they take part, with giant sunflowers, Minions and even Big Ben’s Elizabeth Tower all poised to draw attention as they move around the course .
Wheelchair racing saw early success for the Brits as David Weir and Eden Rainbow-Cooper in the men’s and women’s respectively.

It comes after Kate – who rose to fame as the winner of Big Brother’s third series on Channel 4 in 2020 – insisted millennials would be “blown away” if they watch the show today amid plans for the popular reality series one to make a comeback on ITV2.
Radio presenter Kate fondly recalled her days at the famed reality TV house, saying the contestants were treated to as much alcohol as they wanted, leading to a lot of rough and raunchy behavior that would totally shock Love Island viewers today.
She told The Sun: “I always knew it would come back and I’m so excited for its return to see the reaction from millennials. There’s now this whole new generation of kids who are going to see it for the first time…
“This was at a time in reality TV when producers weren’t rationing alcohol because there weren’t any serious clashes where the police were called!”
She added: “With alcohol comes drinking games. There was so much spin the bottle I kissed everyone – I think.

Big Brother was developed by John de Mol and premiered in the Netherlands. In 2000, Big Brother hit screens in the UK.
Craig Phillips won the first season, Brian Dowling triumphed in the second before Kate became the first female winner of the third season in 2002.
A number of UK spin-offs have been created, including Teen Big Brother, Ultimate Big Brother and the popular Celebrity Big Brother.
In 2011 the program switched from Channel 4 to Channel 5 but was finally discontinued in 2018 after series 19, three years after Love Island – popular with today’s younger generation – arrived on ITV2.
Kate claims Big Brother bosses told them to be careful about sexual interactions around the house and insisted they had to cover up their actions.
But she added, “By series six nobody really cared and it was like, ‘If they have sex, they have sex,’ and they just didn’t care…
“It was a popularity contest, so every romance was a nice little extra. But for me there was no sex.’
The much-anticipated Big Brother comeback was confirmed by ITV bosses earlier this month.
The new UK home of the original reality TV juggernaut has been announced as ITV2 and ITVX, with a series set to air next year.
A carefully selected group of flatmates from all walks of life will reside in Britain’s most famous television house for up to six weeks, with cameras tracking their every move.
For the reinterpretation of the iconic series, the house gets a contemporary new look.
It is hoped that audiences will be captivated as contestants take part in fun tasks, exciting nominations and live evictions.
The fate of the housemates is once again in the hands of the British public, who vote throughout the series and ultimately determine who walks away with a huge cash prize and is crowned the winner.
Comeback: While a presenter is yet to be announced, the reality TV juggernaut’s new UK home has been announced as ITV2 and ITVX, with a series set to air next year (former presenter Davina McCall was on the show in 2002) .
