Stanford female soccer star Katie Mayer was found dead on the campus of the University of California at the age of 22.
Mayer, the goalkeeper and captain of her team, died at a university residence, the university confirmed, but the cause of death was not given immediately.
A senior athlete studying international relations and history, he helped Stanford win the 2019 national championship.
“Her friends describe her as a team player bigger than life in all her pursuits, from choosing an academic discipline, which she said changed ‘my worldview and the very important challenges we need to work together to overcome. “She brought passion to Cardinal’s women’s football program and to women’s sports in general,” Stanford said in a statement.
The university says it has provided resources for those affected by Mayer’s death.
“There are no words to express the deep sadness we feel for the death of Katie Meyer,” Stanford Athletic Director Bernard Muir said in a statement.
“Katie was an outstanding student-athlete and a beloved, passionate leader here at Stanford. Our entire athletic community is heartbroken and Katie will miss her deeply. ”
The school initially announced the death of a student on Tuesday, but did not announce Mayer’s name until her family was told.
Mayer, who attended high school in Newbury Park, California, has one older sister and one younger sister.
