Katy Perry once claimed to know the “real truth” about Russell Brand, who has now been accused of raping four women – but promised to “keep it locked in my safe for a bad day.”
The cryptic comments from Perry, who split from Brand in 2012 after the English comedian filed for divorce via text message, came in a 2013 Vogue interview.
Brand is specifically accused of an attack that occurred just months after his divorce from the pop phenomenon.
“I felt very responsible for it ending, but then I found out the real truth, which I can’t necessarily reveal because I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day,” the singer said. “I let go and thought: It’s not me; That’s a mystery to me. So I left that behind.”
Perry declined to elaborate on what she knew about Brand, and fans speculated at the time that Brand may have been jealous and unsupportive of his ex-wife’s fame, which eclipsed his own.
The theory emerged after the American Idol judge said Brand didn’t like her being the “boss” and described him as “very controlling” in the Vogue interview.

While the pop singer remains silent about her ex, her past comments have resurfaced after allegations were made against Brand that he sexually assaulted four women, including a 16-year-old, between 2006 and 2013, according to a joint investigation released on Saturday Times of London and Channel 4 Dispatches.
Following the report, the BBC – where Brand was working as a radio presenter at the time of the first attacks – said it had launched its own internal investigation into the allegations. Production company Banijay UK is launching its own investigation.
One of the accusers, named Nadia, claimed the English actor raped her “against a wall” at his Los Angeles home in July 2012, five months after his divorce with Perry was finalized.

According to medical records cited by investigative reporters, Nadia was treated at a rape crisis center that same day.
By this point, Perry had completely disappeared from Brand’s life, with the “Roar” singer telling Vogue, “Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me on December 31, 2011 saying told me he was divorcing me.”
The moment was particularly painful for Perry, reflected in her documentary “Part of Me” as she sobbed after receiving his breakup text just before she was due to perform on stage.

The couple had been together since 2009 – they hit it off after she made a cameo in his film Get Him to the Greek, and the two officially started dating after this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.
Perry and Brand married the following year, their marriage only lasting 14 months.
In 2016, Perry met actor Orlando Bloom, who proposed to her in 2019. The couple are engaged and have three-year-old daughter Daisy Dove.

Brand, now a father of two children, is currently married to his wife Laura Gallacher.
The British star denied the rape allegations shortly before the report containing the disturbing allegations was published.
“Amidst this litany of astonishing, rather baroque attacks, there are some very serious allegations that I absolutely refute,” he said, claiming that his sexual relationships were “always consensual.”
