Kentucky opened their four-game summer round at the GLOBL Jam in Toronto on Wednesday with an 81-73 win over Team Germany, behind a strong performance from the team’s only proven veterans. Antonio Reeves, the only returnee with starting experience for Britain, led the Wildcats with 24 points while West Virginia native Tre Mitchell added 20.
The Wildcats return against Team Canada Thursday night at 8 p.m. in a game that will be televised on CBS Sports Network at 12 p.m. Great Britain will also play Team Africa live on CBS Sports Network on Saturday at 13:30. The station will broadcast Sunday’s championship game at 8 p.m. provided the Wildcats make it to that point.
Britain’s young squad will be tested on the show, which sees the Wildcats take on Under-23 national teams. The opening win against Germany featured newcomers DJ Wagner and Justin Edwards in the starting XI and his newcomer Robert Dillingham was the first player to come on as a substitute.
Reed Sheppard and Jordan Burks also posted significant deployments, leaving the injured Aaron Bradshaw and three-star guard Joey Hart the only members of the program’s No. 1 duty class not to see deployment. Of the newcomers, Wagner contributed the most offensive value with 16 points.
The Kentucky roster has been in flux since the program’s 2022-23 season ended with a 22-12 record and a loss in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The opening game of the GLOBL Jam highlighted just how important it was for Britain to keep Reeves in the squad and how significant the addition of Mitchell could prove. Mitchell, a 6-9 center, played at UMass and Texas before landing at WVU last season. He opted for a transfer after Bob Huggins’ tenure in West Virginia ended unceremoniously and signed on June 26 for the UK.
