According to the Ukrainian government, Russia would have used supersonic bombers in the war against Ukraine. Bombs were dropped on the particularly hard-fought port city of Mariupol by Tu-22M3 long-range bombers, Defense Ministry spokesman Olexander Motusyanyk said in Kiev today.
Motusianyk emphasized that Mariupol had not been completely taken over by Russian troops. There is fierce fighting, including in the harbor area and around the Ilyich steel mill. For days, Russia claimed full control of the port. According to information from Moscow, Russian troops already have the steel industry under control.
Mariupol has been surrounded by Russian troops and pro-Russian separatist fighters for weeks. The city has been largely destroyed and the situation of the remaining inhabitants is catastrophic. The US war research institute Institute for the Study of War (ISW) assumes that the strategically important city is “probably” to be conquered next week.
