According to a media report, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un describes his visit to Russia as a clear sign of the “strategic importance” of relations between the two countries. Kim’s visit aims to take friendly and cooperative relations between the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) and Russia to a “new and higher level”, state news agency KCNA reported on Wednesday.

“Kim Jong-un said that his visit to the Russian Federation (…) is a clear manifestation of the position of the WPK and the DPRK government, highlighting the strategic importance of DPRK-Russia relations.” The PTC represents the only governing party in the almost isolated country.

Kim arrived in Russia on Tuesday on a private train for talks with President Vladimir Putin. The Washington government has warned against an arms trade deal between the two countries. According to a media report, Putin will meet with Kim in the coming days. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu will also take part in the talks, Interfax news agency reported, citing Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Footage from KCNA news agency showed Kim arriving at the railway station in the border town of Khasan on Tuesday morning, where he was greeted by senior officials from Moscow and other countries. He can also be seen meeting with Russian Environment Minister Alexander Kozlov.

According to KCNA, this is Kim’s first visit to Russia in nearly four years and his first visit abroad since the coronavirus pandemic. (APA/Portal)
