American reality TV star and social media behemoth Kim Kardashian has purchased the Attallah Cross, the amethyst and diamond pendant famously worn by Princess Diana on multiple occasions, according to auction house Sotheby’s. The piece, crafted by British jeweler Garrard in the 1920s, sold for £163,800 ($202,300) at the auction house’s Royal and Noble sale in London on Wednesday. The pendant – which Diana notably wore to a charity gala in 1987 – fetched more than double the pre-auction reserve estimate, with Sotheby’s confirming it was purchased by an agent on behalf of Kardashian.
“Jewelry owned or worn by the late Princess Diana is very rare to come onto the market, especially a piece like the Attallah Cross, which is so colourful, bold and distinctive,” Sotheby’s Kristian Spofforth said ahead of the sale.
“In a way, this unusual pendant symbolizes the princess’ growing confidence in her choice of clothing and jewelry at this special moment in her life.”
The pendant won’t be the first piece of fashion history to cross paths with Kim Kardashian.
Last year, the 42-year-old made headlines when she attended the Met Gala in the very dress Marilyn Monroe wore when she serenaded then-President John F. Kennedy on his birthday in 1962.
Kardashian was initially accused of damaging the screen legend’s dress, but Los Angeles-based museum Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, which owns the piece, denied the allegations.
