Kim Kardashian ‘drips in pearls’ with sparkling Lagerfeld tribute at Met Gala

(CNN) In a nod to the late designer Karl Lagerfeld’s penchant for pearls, Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala look was infused with them.

“I thought, ‘What’s more Karl?’ You know, the iconic Chanel pearls are what I was always thinking about, so we just wanted to drip in pearls,” Kardashian said of her custom Schiaparelli ensemble on the Vogue livestream Monday night from the red carpet in New York. (Technically the carpet was more of a rich cream color.)

Numerous strands of pearls atop a tan corset, more of which act as Kardashian’s full-length skirt. While it was widely hailed as an elegant example of a trend sweeping the gala’s guests, some social media users compared the look to the near-nude photoshoot Kardashian attended during the first season of her reality show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians “ attended. ”

Members of the Kardashian-Jenner family have been the mainstays of the Met Gala in recent years. At last year’s event, Kardashian made headlines when she wore the dress Marilyn Monroe wore when she sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy in 1962. Her look at the 2021 Met Gala was no less provocative; She wore a “faceless” Balenciaga dress that completely covered her in black from head to toe.

This year, Kardashian’s half-sisters Kylie and Kendall Jenner were also in attendance. Kylie wore a bright red Jean Paul Gaultier dress beneath an oversized red and baby blue coat, both pieces by designer Haider Ackermann.

Kendall – who has walked several of Lagerfeld’s Chanel catwalks – glittered in a sequined black Marc Jacobs leotard with floor-length sleeves and knee-high boots.

“Karl has been a hero of mine since I was 17 looking at Chloe collections,” Jacobs said during a later interview on Vogue’s livestream.

“He was like the true fashion designer to me,” Jacobs said of Lagerfeld’s “unbridled creativity” and disregard for limitations.
