Kim Kardashian is no longer Kim Kardashian West, a judge ruled on Wednesday as he granted her request for an official termination of her marriage to Kanye West as they continue to resolve the remaining issues in their divorce case.
Los Angeles County Supreme Court Justice Steve Cochran terminated Kardashian and West’s marital status during a hearing, so both are legally unmarried, according to court documents reviewed by BuzzFeed News.
In December, Kardashian filed a motion to separate the issue of her marriage to West (now legally known as Ye) from other unclear details in their divorce case. She filed a petition to terminate the relationship, with her lawyers saying “there is no reason to maintain”.
“Irresistible differences have led to the irreparable breakdown of the marriage and there is no way to save the marriage through counseling or other means,” Kardashian’s lawyers wrote. “The continued maintenance of the technical marital status between the applicant and the defendant has no useful purpose.”
In a statement declaring the request, Kardashian said that she and Ye “both deserve the opportunity to build new lives.” The documents include an additional request that the court restore Kimberly’s name to Kimberly Noel Kardashian. According to the Associated Press, this request was also granted.
The AP reported that during the hearing, Cochran asked Kardashian a series of yes or no questions, including “Did problems, disputes and differences cause your marriage to fall apart?” And “Is it your desire to be a lonely person?” before fulfilling her request. She answered “yes” to everyone.
Kardashian filed for divorce from Ye in February 2021. The former celebrity couple was legally married more than seven years before Wednesday’s ruling.
