Kim Petras revealed this Sunday (10) that he just wants to dance and make others dance. The first trans singer to top the American charts, she was one of the few attractions to make her debut in Brazil with a show at The Town. The German pop star is 31 years old, 17 of which he dedicated to danceable pop.
She tried to turn the Interlagos Circuit in São Paulo into a giant dance floor. But he couldn’t. It brought together an audience that consisted of some enthusiastic fans of her at the start and many fans of Bruno Mars. They watched everything sitting down, took selfies or talked nonstop.
The show lives up to the singer’s ambitions. These are songs that are more EDM oriented, super commercial electronic music with romantic and cheeky lyrics. “Treat Me Like a Slut,” “They Wanna Fuck,” and “Superpower Bitch” say they’ve arrived in their titles. The verses are sung over a base with beats and choruses. She has no backing band, no costume changes and only has two pairs of dancers.
Kim makes pop without fear of overdoing it and having fun, as is the case with “Unholy,” the biggest hit of her career, recorded with Sam Smith. He’s left with the final part, which still includes the sticky “Heart to Break,” the repertoire’s best shot.
“Coconuts”, another very danceable and fun song, begins with a microphone dropout. The technical error makes it clear that she sings, even if accompanied by recorded vocals. The lyrics are an ode to her own breasts: she compares them to different fruits and says that like them they are made to be put in the mouth.
Chosen to open the show, Alone is based on a performance by Nicki Minaj and a sample of Better Off Alone. The song features the beat of this Eurodance megahit recorded in 1999 by Dutch group Alice Deejay. When she was younger, Kim got tired of dancing to this song on German dance floors.
At the studios, she works alongside a team comprised of some of today’s biggest pop music producers, including Dr. Luke (Katy Perry), Cirkut (Maroon 5) and Max Martin, record holder for number one song on the charts.
However, the show lacks more maturity and the same care it devotes to its discography. Arrangements and choreography fall short of their potential. At the moment the live performance still feels like a very cool Britney Spears cover.
