King Charles III arrives at a London hospital to undergo prostate surgery

(CNN) – King Charles III was admitted to a London hospital on Friday morning to undergo a “corrective procedure” for an enlarged prostate, Buckingham Palace said.

The palace added in the statement that the 75-year-old monarch had arrived at the facility for his “scheduled treatment.”

“His Majesty would like to thank everyone who has sent their good wishes over the last week and is pleased that his diagnosis is having a positive impact on public health awareness,” he added.

According to a source familiar with the matter, Charles visited Kate, Princess of Wales, at the London clinic before his treatment.

Kate is in hospital after successful abdominal surgery on January 16th.

The palace announced last week that the king would undergo treatment, saying his condition was “benign.”

Carlos arrived at the London Clinic, a private health center near Regent's Park, accompanied by his wife, Queen Camilla, British agency PA Media reported. This is the same hospital where her daughter-in-law Kate, Princess of Wales, remains hospitalized following her abdominal surgery last week.

The King will postpone his engagements for a short period while he recovers after being discharged from hospital.

Specific health conditions of members of the royal family are rarely disclosed publicly. The palace believes they are entitled to a degree of medical privacy despite their status as officials.

However, the royal took an unusual step and decided to share his diagnosis to encourage other men who may be experiencing symptoms to get checked, a royal source told CNN.

And it seems their approach worked. According to the National Health Service in England, the number of men checking to see if they are at risk of prostate cancer has increased.

Visits to the enlarged prostate website, which provides information on causes, symptoms and treatment options, saw traffic surge more than 1,000% above the daily average following the palace's announcement.
