Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko warns people of a blackout if Russia continues its attacks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged his compatriots to resist Russian attacks on the electricity grid and other key infrastructure. “We have to get through this winter and be even stronger than we are now in the spring,” Selenski said Sunday in his nightly address to the nation.
Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko had previously warned of a blackout if Russia continued its attacks. So it cannot be ruled out that electricity, water and heating in Kyiv will fail, Klitschko said on Ukrainian television.
“We are doing everything we can to prevent this”
“We are doing everything we can to prevent this. But let’s be honest: our enemies are doing everything they can to make this city without heat, without electricity, without water supply, in general that everyone dies.” Kyiv plans to set up around 1,000 boiler rooms. However, it is questionable whether this would be enough for the current three million inhabitants.
Electricity was turned off hourly in several areas of Kiev on Sunday. Power cuts were also planned for the regions of Chernihiv, Cherkassy, Zhytomyr, Sumy, Kharkiv and Poltava, according to state energy supplier Ukrenerho.
“I would be closer to peace”
In his speech, Zelensky also massively criticized Iranian arms deliveries to Russia. “Iran supports Russia’s terrorist regime and is helping to prolong the war and therefore prolong the threats to the world created by the Russian war of aggression,” Zelenskiy said.
Without Tehran’s support for Moscow, “we would be closer to peace”, said the Ukrainian head of state.
