Kraus Winkler: Tourism largely returned to its former strength in 2023

Vienna (OTS/BMAW) – “The annual figures for 2023 look very pleasing: Austria's tourism continued to grow in 2023 and is only around one percent behind the number of overnight stays in the record year 2019. Domestic demand has returned to its former strength and confirms that Austrian guests are holidaying in Austria as a fixed point in their holiday planning. Foreign demand also increased by 13.5 percent and, with a 74 percent percentage of foreign guests, it is as international as before the pandemic. The desire to travel remains unchanged despite challenges such as inflation, short-termism and price sensitivity. This is also confirmation of the excellent value for money across all price categories and offers in Austria”, said State Secretary for Tourism Susanne Kraus-Winkler.

According to preliminary results from Statistics Austria, in 2023 Austria achieved 151.14 million overnight stays and 45.20 million arrivals across all accommodation providers. Despite higher prices, overnight stays were only slightly below the 2019 peak. The federal capital, Vienna, recorded the strongest growth compared to the previous year. With 57.43 million overnight stays and an increase of 7.5 percent compared to the previous year, German guests continued to represent one of the most important and stable source markets for Austria, followed by the Netherlands with an increase of 11.2 percent compared to the previous year. It is interesting to note that overnight stays are increasing across all accommodation categories, with the holiday apartment sector recording the strongest growth. Almost 28 percent of all overnight stays in Austria now occur in holiday apartments, private accommodation and farm holidays, and the trend is increasing.

In the first third of the 2023/24 winter season, total overnight stays also increased by 5.6 percent compared to the previous year, with foreign guests registering an increase of 6.1 percent. “Winter tourism is more popular than ever, despite the ongoing debate over prices or lack of snow. “Fortunately, Austria was able to further expand its position as a leading winter sports country in the first third of winter,” said Kraus-Winkler.
