Kurt Angle confirms Randy Orton almost retired due to back injury

Randy Orton is booked for the Survivor Series men’s WarGames match tonight (November 25), his first in-ring appearance since May 2022. Wrestling tonight means he has wrestled at least one every year for the past 21 years match, an amazing feat of longevity.

But during his absence we heard several times that the Viper might have to retire for good due to a back injury. With the Third Generation star just hours away from exceeding that prediction, Kurt Angle – someone who knows a thing or two about wrestling injuries – shared what Orton told him about the situation.

It’s from the latest edition of The Kurt Angle Show podcast:

“I’m just glad he did it [return] because I spoke to him for quite a while when he was out with the injury due to Kim [Orton, Randy’s wife] And [Angle’s wife] Giovanna are best friends.

“He told me, ‘Hey, man, it doesn’t look good. “I don’t know how my back is going to heal when my back is going to heal.” So he was a little worried for a while and eventually it started to heal and now I think he’s fine, but for a while it was pretty serious. They didn’t know [if Orton would return].”

It is said that the 43-year-old Orton’s goal is to wrestle until he is 50, which Angle apparently believes is achievable:

“Randy, he’s young too. I mean, he’s in his 40s, but he’s still pretty young. [Compared to] Me and other wrestling guys like Sting in his 60s and Chris Jericho in his 50s. So yes, he is still young. If he stays healthy, he still has a good six to seven years left.”

The road to this milestone begins tonight.
