CNN –
The Philadelphia Phillies moved just one game away from another World Series with a 6-1 Game 5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on a night where Kyle Schwarber made postseason history.
The win gives the Phillies a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series (NLCS).
The Phillies have been hitting home runs for fun all postseason, and leadoff hitter Schwarber sets the tone for his team almost every night.
After scoring a run early in the first, Schwarber got his turn at the start of the sixth, with Philadelphia taking a 2-0 lead.
In a sight that has become all too familiar to opposing fans, the 30-year-old hit a massive home run to right-center field. The 461-foot player also put Schwarber in the history books.
The Phillies’ designated hitter now has the most home runs in NLCS history after beating No. 11 — surpassing baseball great Albert Pujols.
Schwarber also extended a record he broke on Friday when he moved to the top of the postseason homers list among left-handers. He now has 20 to his name. According to ESPN, Schwarber is also only the fifth player to reach 20, and he did it faster than anyone else.
Also in the top of the sixth, Bryce Harper continued his incredible postseason run with a 444-foot home run. This was Harper’s 11th postseason home run for the Phillies, making him the franchise’s all-time best alongside Jayson Werth and teammate Schwarber.
“The thing about Harper and Schwarber is those guys are so smart,” Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen said after suffering the double hit, according to ESPN. “They were there. You have to hope that you are one step ahead of them. It is difficult. And the fact that they can leave the farm at any time makes it even more difficult.
“It’s wild. Solo homers don’t beat you, but a team that hits solo homers a lot tends to gel after a while.”
JT Realmuto added the exclamation point to the Phillies victory with a two-run home run in the eighth inning after Alek Thomas’ home run in the seventh inning gave Diamondbacks fans a glimmer of hope.
The Phillies now have a chance to advance to the World Series with a home game at Citizen Bank Park on Monday.
