Kyle Shanahan: We’re going to talk about Baker Mayfield, but feel good about what we have

Baker Mayfield was released by the Panthers on Monday and the 49ers lost Jimmy Garoppolo for the season on Sunday, so many people drew some points between the team and the quarterback after the Panthers let Mayfield go.

The 49ers won Sunday, with seventh-seeded Brock Purdy taking offense in Garoppolo’s place, and many wondered if the 49ers would complement him with the first overall pick of the 2018 draft. That’s the question head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked on Monday.

Shanahan didn’t rule out anything, but said the team that includes Brock Purdy and veteran Josh Johnson — the 49ers retired him from the Broncos practice team — feels comfortable as their quarterbacks moving forward.

“We’re investigating everything,” Shanahan said of 49ersWebzone. “But that would surprise me now and we have to talk about it this afternoon and stuff. I’ve always been a fan of his, but I have a very good feeling for our players.”

The 49ers are 24th in the waiver order, so there’s no guarantee Mayfield will be available if they make a claim on him. All claims are being processed Tuesday afternoon, so it won’t be long before we figure out where Mayfield is headed next.
