Laal Singh Chaddha makers deny reports of traders demanding compensation

After Laal Singh Chaddha’s tepid performance at the box office, reports claimed the film’s distributors had asked the producers for compensation.

Aamir Khan’s latest film Laal Singh Chaddha didn’t do as expected at the box office. As it was Aamir’s first release in four years and being backed by a major studio, it was expected to hit the park in terms of ticket sales. But in the four days since its release, the film’s earnings have been disappointing. Recently it was even alleged that certain traders had asked the manufacturers for compensation for the losses they allegedly suffered. Now the production house behind the film has responded to those reports. Also read: Laal Singh Chaddha Box Office: Aamir Khan’s Film Can’t Beat Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2

Laal Singh Chaddha hit theaters on Thursday to celebrate Raksha Bandhan. The film made £38million in its four-day opening weekend in the domestic market, a disappointing figure. By comparison, Kartik Aaryan’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 – a much smaller film – made £55million in its first three days three months ago. Industry insiders have said Laal Singh Chaddha may not surpass the £100billion domestic revenue mark, something all Aamir films have done over the past 15 years. This prompted reports that distributors are facing losses and have appealed to production house Viacom 18 for compensation.

In response, Ajit Andhare, CEO of Viacom 18, told ETimes: “There are no outside distributors, it’s distributed by V18Studios and there is no money lost in the first place. The film is still running in cinemas in India and internationally. These are unfounded speculations.”

Most major production houses and studios in India have their own distribution networks. They deal directly with distribution in large centers and sub-distribute the film for smaller cities on a commission basis. Laal Singh Chaddha was also released with the same model. The report also quoted an exhibitor as saying: “Most studios don’t sell their territories, they always sell directly. Even if we try to claim the rights, it’s too expensive for us. And the reports of distributors demanding money in the case of Laal Singh Chaddha are unfounded as the producers are only distributors of the film.”

Directed by Advait Chandan, Laal Singh Chaddha is the official Hindi remake of Tom Hanks’ Forrest Gump. The film also stars Kareena Kapoor, Mona Singh and Naga Chaitanya. Laal Singh Chaddha has received mixed reviews from critics, who called it a faithful adaptation but criticized the acting and screenplay. The film also faced calls for a boycott from a certain section, with Trends condemning the film on Twitter for weeks ahead of its release.
