Brasília The fourth class of the Supreme Court (STJ) of Sergipe analyzed this Tuesday (17) an indictment by Expedita Ferreira Nunes, the only daughter of Maria Bonita and Lampião, historical figures of the national Cangaço. In the play, a hotel chain in Pernambuco is accused of abusively using its name when advertising one of its motels.

According to the lawsuit, the slogan “Maria Bonita, light the lampião” was posted on a roadside billboard without the consent of the heiress. Because the advertisements referred to her parents, Expedita sued the motel’s manager, claiming to have “misused images for commercial gain, implying improper possession of the characters’ intangible heritage”.

Compensation was set at R$8,000 by the Sergipe Court of Justice, but the motel manager appealed to the STJ, emphasizing that it was “impermissible” to use exclusively pseudonyms associated with Northeastern culture.
