Language Day: Why Is It Celebrated On April 23? Time

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, the famous author of Don Quixote de la Mancha, died on April 22, 1616 in Madrid, Spain. In his honor, Language Day is celebrated every day on April 23rd.

And why? The reason is that the anniversary of a person’s death was then the day after his departure. So it was officially registered.

It is curious that just like the date of Cervantes (“the father of the Spanish language”) death was set at April 23, 1616, William Shakespeare died on the same day and year.is considered the “father of the English language”. For this reason, today is also the day of this language.

The Catholic University of Colombia states on its website that “In 2010 the United Nations created the ‘Days of Languages’ to celebrate cultural diversity and multilingualism, for which April 23 is declared ‘Spanish Language Day’ became; In Colombia, however, the date was fixed by Decree 707 of April 23, 1938.
