Lara Trump recently joined Tiffany Trump as another music-loving member of the Trump family with her recent cover of the Tom Petty song “I Won’t Back Down.” 99 percent of the Trump family’s new ventures have resulted in heated controversy, and some eagle-eyed netizens recalled another incident with this song that could spell trouble for Lara.

In case you need a refresher, Lara recently released the song on Apple Music (and a few days later, she and her husband Eric Trump accused the platform of “shadowbanning” her song).
Many users of X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, reminded other users of a previous incident Involvement of the Trump family and the Petty family. In 2020, Lara’s father-in-law, former US President Donald Trump, used Petty’s song during a rally in Oklahoma.

Shortly thereafter, the Petty family wrote up
They added: “Both the late Tom Petty and his family stand firmly against racism and discrimination of any kind.” Tom Petty would never want a song of his to be used in a hate campaign. He liked bringing people together… At the same time, we issued an official cease and desist letter to the Trump campaign.”
While the family never used the song at their rallies again, Lara went ahead and covered it.

You might be thinking, “How could she get into legal trouble?” People cover songs all the time.” True, people often cover hits, and omissions don’t usually last long. It’s not often that you get into legal trouble over coverage, but you can still get sued for it.
As far as we know, “I Won’t Back Down” is not a song in the public domain; Typically, you don’t need explicit permission to cover a song. Due to the fair use rule, it is quite easy to cover and try out works, but there is a caveat.
However, given the Petty family’s previous legal actions since the Trump family tried to associate the song with them, many are speculating that the Petty family could take action again.
